Amsterdam Denim (14.07.2011) ::

With the rampant success of 3D as an entertainment platform in cinema, it was only a matter of time before it spilled out into other creative ventures. At G-Star RAW’s S/S 2012 Berlin Runway Show, 3D denim was the star of the innovative brand’s latest collection. First question. What? Second question. How? Third question. Why?

What
Don’t worry, you’re not going to be charged an extra fee for 3D glasses. The 3D effect of the garments are more illusory, with a greater focus on silhouette and detail. Cementing the G-Star tradition of creating clothing, not as designers, but architects.

How

With color and molding. Playing lighter colors off the darker, G-Star gives the same perception of shading that an artist might give to a still life. They’ve been doing this for sometime, initially with their G-Star Elwood collection. This season they’re taking it a step farther. Denims are stretched on special mannequins, and are then steamed and baked in a special laundry process, producing a 3D effect in the piece.

Why

3D clothing is, as you might have guessed, a technological advancement! The clothing is designed to follow your form. It works with your body. The inspiration comes from jeans worn by the wild ones, racing on their motorcycles in the 1920’s and 30’s, the pants were cut to provide maximum flexibility and comfort while on their hogs.
